PRESIDENT’S REPORT
This week I wanted to highlight two of our most successful programs, Aust Rotary Health and ROMAC. October is Mental Health awareness month. Did you know that one in five Australians will suffer a serious mental health problem in their life. So how does Australia Rotary Health help? Well by awareness and October is Crazy Hat Events. This is fundraising, but how do the funds help? ARH Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellowship recipient, Dr. Gemma Sicouri, is an early career researcher and clinical psychologist at the Black Dog Institute, University of New South Wales. Her research explores parental and cognitive factors in children's anxiety to improve psychological treatments. Recently, her published work on panic attack symptoms in children provided a new set of guidelines for parents and caregivers that help during and after these episodes. ARH supports her doctoral research program.
The other news item I read this week was on Elina, the young 5-year-old girl who came to Melb with a club foot. ROMAC is celebrating the return home to Vanuatu of Elina, and her mum Enneth, after 3 months of treatment in Melbourne. It was a long and cold period for both of them to be away from an island village that they had never left before. But it was well worth the endurance because Elina went home with her previously distorted foot now perfectly straight, like her other one. There are currently five children in Australia on Romac programs. Changing Lives, one at a time !
This week we are at the Hub and will hear about how Heather Dryden is changing young people's lives by education in Bali.
Remember to let Ray know numbers by Monday noon.
Well thats it from me,Yours in Rotary and thanks for reading
